2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

Unless we're talking Evolution, when it comes to the standard edition Lancer, the excitement factor ranks high on level 'bleh'. It wasn't even the slower version of its turbocharged sibling, rather, a pitifully slow car in general, and to us, the kind nobody ever wanted when picking cars at the rental agency. With the '08 model Lancer, Mitsubishi is ready to change peoples' minds-and they will. Based on the'07 Outlander, this all-new Lancer sedan comes in three trim levels: the DE, ES and GTS, all powered by a 2.0L 4B11 four cylinder, MIVEC-equipped engine. It's a sporty ride that doesn't require you to fill up with the premium elixir but enjoys being driven in the high rpm range and screams nicely in all gears.

Out of the three variations, it's the GTS model you'll want most because it comes with standard features you can truly appreciate, namely, a more refined suspension and brakes (the same ones carried over from the Outlander). Those inept at driving stick can opt for the first-of-its-kind six-speed Sportronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic. Operated by magnesium steering wheel paddle shifters, it gives the driver smoother shifting as it adapts to changing vehicle speeds; the CVT helps keep engine speeds at their peak level of efficiency while improving gas mileage and emissions. All GTS models get larger 18-inch wheels and four-wheel disc brakes. What's more, Mitsubishi's engineers have focused so much of their R&D into the Lancer, they've increased the torsional rigidity so that it's stiffer than the Evo IX!

The features for the GTS don't stop at performance-the standard model comes with a Bluetooth wireless interface (optional on the ES), giving you hands-free cellphone technology so you can keep your attention more focused on the road. There's an optional Navigation and Technology package, which gives you a space-age touchscreen head unit backed with a 30-gig hard drive navi system with more audio features than we had time to figure out. But trust us, it's very cool for a factory feature. The Navigation upgrade also uses the FAST key (Freehand Advanced Security Transmitter) entry system, which allows you to unlock the vehicle even if your remote's still in your pockets by grabbing onto any of the door handles or trunk. Additionally, there's the Sun and Sound package for the ES and GTS, which comes with a six month, prepaid SIRIUS subscription and a 650-watt Rockford Audio premium sound system.

Paddle shifting? You bet, but only for CVT-equipped autos.

1957 Chevy 150

1957 Chevy 150 - Featherweight Champ

Even though it was devoid of all the fancy stainless and chrome trim of the Bel Air and 210 model lines, the classic shape and body features of the '57 were still there on the utilitarian 150 models. From the instantly recognizable front grille to the F-86 fighter jet-inspired fins, this body style was one of the first to look fast even while sitting still.

The dual-quad 283 was available in either a 245hp (hydraulic cam) or a 270hp (mechanical cam) version. The batwing air cleaner used dual air filter elements for the pair of Carter carbs. Igniting all of that air and fuel is a factory original GM dual-point distributor. Feeding the thirsty Carters is an AC high-volume mechanical fuel pump. The 283 with its short stroke was a fast revving engine for its day and, if tuned properly, could make lots of high-rpm power on the street or at the track.

Look at that trunk! You could fit three bodies in there. The expansive size of a Tri-Five trunk made it ideal for the nomadic salesman (or mob hitman) who had to live out of his car for weeks at a time and haul his products across countless state lines.

This car's clean lines aren't cluttered up by any fancy options like heat or even a radio. Built well before anything that could be considered a portable music device was built, one can only wonder what the car's original owner did while he was driving. Any '57, from the Bel Air down to the 150 could be ordered with as many, or as few, options as the buyer wished.

Top 10 2007 SUVs

Incoming King Of SUVs

1.Spyker D12 Peking-to-Paris

Base price: Not yet available

Dutch supercar-maker Spyker plans to put this SUV into production in the fourth quarter. The grueling Peking-to-Paris endurance race of 1907 is an appropriate name to invoke on an SUV that can go off-road, but also has a 500-horsepower, 12-cylinder engine that generates a zero-to-60 time of five seconds and a top speed of 185 mph.

Best Redesigned SUV

2.Acura MDX

Base price: $39,995

Acura's redesign of its family-friendly flagship MDX SUV was revolutionary. Historically one of the nicest luxury SUVs, the MDX is now sexier-looking and sportier, thanks to 300 horsepower and a high-tech all-wheel drive system. One of the most impressive new-car introductions of the last 12 months.

Still The Most Elegant SUV

3.Land Rover Range Rover

Base price: $77,250

The ride of choice for Britain's royal family, the Range Rover is still unchallenged among SUVs for interior and exterior beauty and luxury. It features heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel and a triple-laminated windshield that optimizes interior acoustics and keeps occupants isolated from the outside world

Best American SUV

4.Cadillac Escalade

Base price: $55,400

Cadillac redesigned its iconic Escalade SUV last year. Not only is the Escalade better suited than ever for the rap stars and basketball players who love it (it has more exterior chrome trim than any previous-generation Escalade, Cadillac says); it also has an upscale, Audi-inspired interior--the nicest of any American car.

Best High-Performance SUV

5.Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Base price: $93,700

Certain SUVs--such as BMW's X5, Infiniti's FX and Land Rover's Range Rover Sport--are designed to compare favorably with sports cars. The king of these vehicles is Porsche's family-friendly 500-horsepower Cayenne Turbo, which can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, travel offroad and has a top speed of 171 mph

Best Escalade Alternative

6.Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

Base price: $53,175

Mercedes' first full-size SUV hits hard against the Escalade, offering seating for seven and such upscale features as an air suspension, adjustable ride height that lowers automatically at speed for more efficient driving, chrome trim and a third-row sunroof.

Best Reason To Buy GM Stock

7.Buick Enclave

Base price: $32,790

Go to Buick.com and Tiger Woods will greet you with a video, saying, "There may have been a time when Buicks weren't exactly considered cool." Do you mean the last 40 years? The Enclave, however, has a sumptuous, world-class luxury interior that makes the car the first Buick in decades that gets the blood going.

Best Family-Friendly SUV

8.Honda Pilot

Base price: $27,095

Honda's family-friendly Pilot is more affordable than similar luxury models and has the most ingeniously designed interior of any family-oriented vehicle. Huge storage spaces are everywhere you look, and you never need to think about where to set down your bag, your Happy Meal or your juice box. Clearly designed by people with kids.

Best Green SUV

9.Lexus RX Hybrid

Base price: $41,180

One of the few luxury gas/electric crosses, Lexus' RX Hybrid occupies a special place in the world of SUVs. Its gas engine and electric motor team to put out 268 horsepower, but they also get you 32 mpg in the city. And according to the EPA's scoring system, it's among the most earth-friendly vehicles, in terms of air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Coolest High-Tech SUV

10.Acura RDX

Base price: $32,995

Acura's new RDX SUV incorporates breakthrough technology that eliminates turbo lag--the pesky delay between hitting the gas and having an engine's turbocharger(s) provide a power boost. The car also has an all-wheel drive system that can spin each rear wheel at a different speed, making steering more precise.

1971 Mercedez Benz 300SEL

Make: Mercedes-Benz
Model: 300SEL
Year: 1971
Mileage: 103000
Condition: Original
Location: Portland, Oregon
Engine Type: 8 Cylinder
Transmission Type: Automatic
Value: Less than $30,000
Description
Hello, My name is Don Vinton and I live in Portland, Oregon, USA. I am the proud owner of this immaculate 1971 300 SEL 3.5. It has always been a Portland car and the owner I just purchased it from owned it since 1972. This one of those cars I never ever thought of possessing until it found me. I'm more partial to British (two Triumphs) but It was only a few moments after I saw and drove this beauty I knew that if I didn't buy it I'd kick myself for quite a while! The only thing that's not original is the re-upholstered driver and passenger seats which were professionally re-done in leather. Best regards, Don

Safest Cars In the World

1.Acura RL

The bad news is that the RL is outgunned by premium sedans with bigger engines and nicer interiors, including the Mercedes S-Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Although it overhauled the RL fairly recently, Acura has not been able to maintain the spike in sales that occurred after the new model's introduction. In the first quarter, American RL sales declined by 37%.

2.Honda Civic

Base price: $15,110

Received highest marks from: Consumer Reports and IIHS

We have said it before: This is the car you want to buy for your teenager. It is one of the market's safest, least expensive, most reliable and most fuel-efficient cars. To top it off, the Civic looks cool.

3.Saab 9-3

Base price: $26,620

Received highest marks from: Consumer Reports and IIHS

The guys in our parking garage love this one. "Elegante," said one to the other when we lowered the top on a 9-3 convertible we had borrowed. We like this car too, particularly because of its handsome interior and exterior and its turbocharged engines.

The 9-3 is also the only Saab that gets our blood going. The 9-2X is a reheated Subaru, the 9-7X is a reheated Chevy and the 9-5 is a pretender. (A $35,000 sedan with a four-cylinder engine? Come on.)

4.Volvo S80

Base price: $38,280

Received highest marks from: Consumer Reports and NHTSA

As usual, Volvo earns a spot on this list. The S80 is the company's flagship sedan and is within shouting distance of being a premium vehicle. Before it becomes a true luxury car, however, it needs something more substantial than a five-cylinder engine. But read on.

Best Sedan Cars

1.Best Performance Sedan: BMW M5

Base Price: $81,200

How shocking is BMW's use of a 500-hp V-10 engine in its M5 sedan? Put it this way: Dodge's Viper two-door, one of the most extreme performance cars, uses a 500-hp V-10. Formula 1 cars use V-10s. But this is a BMW. The V-10 here comes with a first-rate luxury cockpit and some of the most engaging driving dynamics and technology on any vehicle, including sports cars.

2.Best Ultra-luxury Sedan: Bentley Arnage, Maybach 62 and Rolls-Royce Phantom (tie)

Base Price: $220,985 (Arnage); $385,250 (62); $332,750 (Phantom)

Once again, we are unwilling and unable to narrow the ultra-luxury sedan honorees down to one winner. The flagship models from Bentley, Maybach and Rolls-Royce all represent the height of automotive opulence, and all are appointed with the finest luxury features. The Arnage is a limousine that can outgun most sports cars. The Maybach has rear seats that are as accommodating as international business-class seats. The Rolls (pictured above) is, well, a Rolls.

3.Best Celebrity Magnet: Bentley Continental Flying Spur

Base Price: $171,285

Such celebrities as Paris Hilton have been seen driving Bentley's Continental coupe, and the British automaker recently began offering a sedan companion, the Continental Flying Spur. Not only is the Flying Spur gorgeous inside and out, it is also one of the fastest and most desirable performance cars on the market, thanks largely to its 12-cylinder engine, which has twin turbochargers and more than 550 hp.

4.Best Premium Sedan: BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class (tie). Honorable Mention: Audi A8.

Base Price: $71,800 (7 Series); $86,175 (S-Class)

In the past, we have mainly honored the Audi A8 for its great interior. But Mercedes' new S-Class flagship (pictured above) trumps even Audi's masterpiece, thanks to gorgeous features, such as ambient “waterfall” lighting that surrounds the cabin, and ultra-luxury touches, including seats that can give multiple types of massages. Our other honoree, the 7 Series, has always been a more engaging driver than the A8, with superior ride and handling, and it also has a near-perfect interior.

5.
Best Entry-Level Luxury Sedan: BMW 3 Series

Base Price: $30,900

Several great, overhauled, entry-level luxury sedans have arrived, including new versions of BMW's 3 Series, Audi's A4 and Lexus' IS. The Audi has gone from being handsome and popular to being almost perfect, but it still suffers from over-assisted brakes and inferior steering feedback to that of BMW's 3 Series--the car which, after its overhaul, is still the standard-setter for interior luxury, engaging driving dynamics and overall desirability.

6.Best Dose of Detroit Attitude: Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8. Honorable mention: Cadillac DTS.

Base Price: $42,695 (300C SRT8); $38,095 (Charger SRT8)

These are two old-school, mean-looking Detroit sedans, each with wicked performance chops. Both the 300C SRT8 (pictured above) and Charger SRT8 use 6.1-liter, 425-hp Hemi V-8 engines, and both are reasons to be optimistic about Detroit's future.

7.Best-Kept Secret: Volkswagen Passat 3.6

Base Price: $29,950

Volkswagen's new Passat 3.6 sedan--the fancy Passat trim level--has a luxury-car interior, complete with plenty of wood trim and gorgeous, jewelry-like gauges on the instrument panel. It is quick and sexy, but innocuous-looking. The styling--designed to be more Japanese-bland than that of the previous Passat--masks an interior that we certainly weren't expecting.

8.
Best Makeover: Infiniti M and Lexus GS (tie)

Base Price: $40,840 (M); $43,845 (GS)

Note that this category is not “Best Overhaul.” We mean “makeover,” as in “change of identity.” The mid-range Infiniti and Lexus (shown above) sedans have gone from being nonentities to having hip, sexy, inviting interiors, as well as sportier and more youthful exteriors. Both cars now have more power and more exciting driving dynamics, which brings them more in line with competition from Germany

9.Best-Looking Sedan: Maserati Quattroporte

Base Price: $103,700

In a category with too many “honorable mentions” to list here, Maserati's Quattroporte stands out. The market has plenty of handsome luxury sedans, but the Quattroporte is as sexy as any sports car--make that any car--on the market, and it proves that sedans need not be mere compromises bought for passenger and cargo utility. The Quattroporte has a design by Italian design house and longtime Ferrari partner Pininfarina.

10.Best Bargain Luxury Car: Toyota Avalon

Base Price: $26,775

Toyota's Avalon is every bit as nice as most Lexus vehicles--and can fly too, thanks to a 268-hp motor. That's 53 more horses than you would get in an entry-level BMW 3 Series, but the Avalon is far more humble. In fact, its styling is designed to blend in, not stand out. We think that's hot; we love surprising Audis and Jaguars with Avalons that we borrow for evaluation

11.Coolest Interior: Audi A6

Base Price: $40,820

This car is a design clinic. A Rolls-Royce interior is over-the-top, but an A6 interior is a perfect combination of stylish instrumentation, sexy ambient lighting (red backlighting is everywhere you look) and a center console that looks super-high-tech. If it's nighttime and we have our choice of cockpits to sit in, we choose to be in the Audi A6.

Top 10 Convertible Cars

Ultimate convertible: Aston Martin DB9 Volante and Ferrari F430 Spider (tie)

Base price: $174,000 (DB9 Volante) and $199,259 (F430 Spider)

The coupes and convertibles in Aston's DB9 (pictured above) and Ferrari's F430 families are probably our favorite cars on the market. No cars are more engaging, few cars are faster and virtually nothing--automotive or otherwise--is sexier. These two convertibles have perfect steering and balance, gorgeous interiors and exteriors, more than 400 hp each and maximal levels of desirability.

Hottest new convertible: Cadillac XLR-V

Base price: $100,000

A supercharged, 443-hp V-8 was exactly what the XLR line needed. As a bonus, the new XLR-V also has crisper handling, exclusive interior appointments and such sexy styling modifications as a raised hood. Cadillac must be awfully confident to charge $100,000 for one of its cars, but it has crossed into six-figure territory with a strong vehicle.

All-time classic convertible: Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet (tie)

Base price: $52,190 (Corvette) and $81,400 (911)

The Corvette and 911 lines have each been around for over 40 years, and they only get sexier and faster with time. For 2006, the Corvette has a 400-hp V-8, and the 911 (pictured above) gets 325 hp from its entry-level, six-cylinder engine. The cars' prices may seem high compared with entry-level vehicles, but compared with the world's elite sports cars--a company in which they are included--they are bargains.

Best convertible for raw power: Dodge Viper SRT-10

Base price: $85,745

No car makes a statement like the Dodge Viper does. Pedestrians give it space when they see it emerge from garages; not even a Rolls-Royce gets more respect. That's because the unparalleled ferocity of the Viper's styling indicates that it has a lethal, 510-hp V-10 engine under the hood. Never mind that it's the second-most uncomfortable car on the market (see Lotus Elise slide).

Ultimate Japanese convertible: Honda S2000

Base price: $34,600

This is not a cutesy roadster for weekend picnics. This is a screaming, high-revving roller-coaster ride that brings grown men to their knees. An engineering miracle, the S2000 squeezes 237 hp out of a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine--and the power peaks at a knuckle-whitening 7,800 rpm. Just for fun, compare the S2000 with Mercedes' scorching, $62,000 SLK55 AMG roadster. The Honda has 34% more horsepower per cylinder and 64% more per liter—for 56% of the price.

Flashiest convertible: Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster

Base price: $319,100

No car is better at attracting attention than Lamborghini's Murciélago flagship, and few cars are more exciting to drive. The Murciélago's unsubtle, aerodynamic look complements an equally unsubtle 580-hp, 12-cylinder engine

Best convertible for purists: Lotus Elise

Base price: $43,915

Your grandma won't be able to get in it. One 6-foot-3-inch Forbes.com editor could not operate the vehicle, because he could not reasonably seat himself. And its suspension, on city streets, is like a buckboard. But this ultra-lightweight, ultra-small, ultra-fast toy (zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds) is one of the market's most beloved sports cars. It has outlandish styling that enthusiasts love, as well as perfect handling and balance.

Best entry-level roadster: Mazda MX-5 Miata

Base price: $20,995

After almost 20 years on the market, the Mazda Miata is still a thrill. Mazda recently overhauled its iconic roadster, making it more attractive and user-friendly, and also more fun to drive. It raised the bar higher for the cheap-roadster segment, meaning such new arrivals as Pontiac's Solstice have a ways to go. The Miata may not have as much power as a Corvette, but the rush both cars give you under hard acceleration is comparable.

Ultimate German convertible: Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

Base price: $186,775 (2007 model)

Inside the cockpit is a Mercedes interior with all the comfort and amenities you would expect from one of the world's leading luxury-car makers. Under the hood is a race car engine--a 604-hp V-12 with twin turbochargers. Porsche's Carrera GT convertible flagship costs more than $250,000 more, but it has only one more unit of horsepower than the SL65.

Best convertible for iconoclasts: Panoz Esperante

Base price: $92,256

We have a soft spot for the thrilling, exotic cars of Georgia-based Panoz Auto Development, and we honor the company's delightful convertibles year after year. The Esperante has outstanding steering, a 305-hp base engine (the top-drawer Esperante GTLM has a supercharged, 420-hp V-8) and a luxurious interior. The Esperante is equally at home on racetracks and the streets of upscale suburbs.
