The 2009 Mercedes E-Class

Last year, Mercedes introduced a new C-class Which is the nearest it has come to making a MW 3- series. The C-class has the spirit and driving dynamics that its predecessors lacked and even introduced different front-end styling to distinguish the most popular Sport versions. Surely, its bigger brother, the new model E-class, would follow the same pattern?

The answer is no. The new E class has many virtues, but sportiness isn't one of them. At least not for the first versions to go on sale; we can expect the E63 AMG, announced at the New York Auto Show in April and due to go on sale at the end of the year, to be the exception.

Mercedes bosses say that as the heart of the range, the E-class is too important to change fundamentally. They point out that in this market sector, Mercedes is dominant; it easily out-sells the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. So the ninth generation would develop by evolution, not revolution. It had to be a comfortable familiarity but below the surface incorporate a myriad of detail improvements and all the latest technology.

So W212 is lower, wider and more prominently wedge-shaped than its predecessor. That allows it to have the best aerodynamics in its class: a drag coefficient of 0.25 (most of its rivals are 0.28 or above) The imposing grille is still there - and the star still rises above it - but the four headlamps are angular rather than oval.

To meet European regulations for pedestrian safety, that low, wind-cheating bonnet has to be able to pop up 50mm in an accident; while others use complex pyrotechnics, Mercedes has an elegantly simple solution with steel springs.

The emphasis on aerodynamics is part of a program to improve fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions dictated by other EC regulations. For some reason, in Germany environmental measures that elsewhere are called 'green', turn blue.

Mercedes calls its eco-pack age BlueEfficiency. It includes more efficient engines, low rolling resistance tyres and energy-saving alternators, and fuel, air conditioning and power steering pumps that switch off when not required.

The four-cylinder petrol engines are downsized to 1.8 litres, have direct fuel injection and are turbocharged. The three four-cylinder CDI diesels - E200, E220 and E250 - all use the new 2.1-litre engine in different states of tune. The E350 CDI and E350 CGI have developments of the previous six-cylinder engines; the petrol CGI also has direct injection. The 5.5-litre V8 engine for the top model, the E500, is carried over from the old E-class; this is the only version not to have the additional BlueEfficiency features.

In Europe, more than half the market for this type of car is diesel, so I concentrated on the E250 CDI and E350 CDI. These engines develop respectively 204 and 231bhp. The 250 comes equipped with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission while the six-cylinder 350 has Mercedes' latest seven-speed automatic.

The four-cylinder diesel has a curious combination of characteristics. It is unusually smooth and quiet at idle but noisy when pushed hard. Although the 250 has two turbochargers in sequence to even out the power delivery, the performance is far from startling, and the automatic transmission does it no favours. In this respect, the seven-speed E350 CDI is much lively but our experience with the new Jaguar AJ-V6D (and the BMW 335d) suggests it is not the best of the latest crop of high performance diesels.

As before, the F-class is better to travel in than to drive. All models have adaptive shock absorbers that react to the driving situation and adjust to provide maximum ride comfort or cornering stability as required. The seats are improved, the air conditioning allows the choice of three different air volume and distribution modes and is arranged in three independent zones driver, front passenger and rear passengers - and there is more space inside thanks to the 2cm longer wheelbase and 3.5cm extra width. Mercedes aimed to make this car the most comfortable car in its class. I think it may have succeeded.

Mercedes has been in the fore front with most of the active safety systems that we now take for granted: ABS anti-lock braking, ASR traction control, ESP stability control. The new F-class moves this to a new level with a raft of 'assist' systems, all electronic and very clever and designed to see and react to the motoring hazards and mitigate their consequences. This car doesn't quite drive itself but you get the impression that it could... Where to start? Attention Assist is a good example of Mercedes-knows- best. This drowsiness detector is standard equipment on all E-class models. Sensors monitor 70 different parameters to pick up irregularities in driving behavior. If it detects a series of steering errors or other inconsistencies it concludes that the driver is sleepy and sounds a warning and a symbol representing a cup of tea appears on the instrument display to suggest that you take a break.

Brake Assist Plus is a radar- based system linked to the optional Distronic cruise control which provides the driver with optimum braking pressure when a collision is imminent and if no action is taken will apply the brakes automatically. Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera on the windscreen to follow lines in the road and when the car has moved out of a lane with out indicating, an electric motor in the steering wheel vibrates its rim as a warning. Blind Spot Assist provides a light warning of the presence of a car in the blind spot of the side mirror. Speed Limit Assist, recently available on a number of other cars, recognizes speed limit signs and displays the prevailing limit at the center of the speedometer.

Nightview Assist Plus uses an infrared camera to give a greyscale image on the dashboard screen to show hazards beyond the light range and highlight pedestrians. The new E-class takes vehicle lighting further forward, liter ally and technologically. Others have active headlamps that turn with steering or illuminate corners but Mercedes' optional Adaptive Highbeam Assist uses a windscreen camera to recognize oncoming traffic and adjust the headlamp beams accordingly. This is much more than automatic dip ping; it changes the shape of the dipped light beam to give the best possible road illumination from 65 to as much as 300 meters. It works beautifully.

Mercedes talks of all these systems making the car your 'intelligent partner'. My first reaction was 'too much stuff' but there is no doubt that they represent further advances in safety technology and of course you don't have to tick all the options boxes.

The 2007 Koenigsegg CCX

There are many different supercars that we know about but what about the ones that are rarely constructed or even seen in person. One of the strongest types of supercars that rivals even the Lamborghini and Ferrari is the Koenigsegg. This car has a brilliant design to it that makes makes us believe it would be better suited in the air instead of on the ground.

In 2007 the CCX model was created by the New Koenigsegg Chronograph Direct Focus Instrument Cluster and its creative engineering team. Working together, they gave it the look that we love - but with the force and the features that are needed in any supercar. One of the most unique characteristics that it has been given is the tri-axial 3D three pointer layout.

This is a intricate layout that presents the associations between the engine speed, boos pressure, and the velocity. It gives the one who is driving the power to check on the gear ratios and boost pressure to grant for the right amount of acceleration and helps them to know what gear they should be in.

In short this means that when they choose to take it out on the open road they do not have to keep looking down at all the numbers to make sure that everything is functioning the right way. This permits them to focalise more on the road and allows for safer driving - even if they are speeding.

The interior of the car indicates a clear sign of solace and elegance - which you can expect just by looking at the outside. It is flawless and supplies just enough room for two people.

Underneath the hood the Koenigsegg CCX has been given all new bespoke billet aluminum uprights which permit for elevated stiffness and a reduced un-sprung weight. This along with the other mechanical advancements including traction control make it safe to drive in both snow and wet conditions.

Take a look at the Koenigsegg CCX Supercar and how great it is. Also check out news on the Opel and what is going on with them.

The Car BMW and Lamborghini Built?

What if you took two companies that had contrasting, unique strengths with cars and put them together to build a car emphasizing both of their traits? Well, that's exactly what happened in the 1970s when BMW and Lamborghini got together to build a legendary car - the BMW M1.

The BMW M1 was a car built in a soap opera environment of sorts. The problem wasn't BMW, but Lamborghini. BMW had retained the Italian exotic sports car company to design the M1. Alas, Lamborghini was having major financial problems at the time and ended up going bankrupt half way through the project. BMW was thus forced to take the car back and complete the project on its own.

These odd circumstances led to an odd car. The first M1s look more or less exactly like you might think they would if Lamborghini did half the work and then handed the car off to BMW and did not consult on the rest of the project. The car has some of the swooping designs you see with all Lamborghinis, but also some of the typical lines you see in BMW. Put together, the car looks something like...a DeLorean. To some, this is a beautiful design. To others, it is not.

The BMW M1 was sold to the public for only three years - 1978-81. The sales for this period totaled 456 cars, the smallest production line in the history of BMW. Oddly, the base engine was a 6 cylinder, with twin cams and produced a top speed in the 160 miles per hour range. Other BMW models were later given the M1 version, but they were just upgrades of the respective base production cars and not real M1s.

It must be said that the powers at BMW really liked the M1. They actually started a PRO M1 racing series that restricted teams to using just the M1 car. The series became a launching pad for Formula One drivers. The iconic Ferrari driver Niki Lauda won two PRO M1 championships and future F1 Champ Nelson Piquet won one. BMW still supports the series today although M1s long ago were phased out in exchange for 3 series cars.

Why write about a car nearly 30 years old? Well, BMW is considering updating the car and releasing a modern version. It is called the M1 Homage Concept. The car has only been seen once, but it just looks brutally wicked in a good way. The current economic environment has stopped BMW and other companies from pursuing such projects, but expect the car to get some attention when the economic situation improves. I honestly don't care for the original M1 design, but the Homage Concept looks like an absolutely beautiful and aggressive car design worth every penny of what will certainly be a very high price.

The Best Eco Friendly Cars

At first learning about eco friendly cars may seem overwhelming. Once you get to know the common terms, it is much easier to understand.

There are 4 main types of fuel for eco-friendly cars - hybrid, biodiesel, natural gas, and ethanol. Which type is best? Well that may depend on where you live.

Ethanol
If you live in the western US, you may find ethanol is the best choice. Ethanol is made from corn, barley or wheat and has lower emissions than traditional fuel. The nice thing about ethanol cars is that they can run on traditional fuel or ethanol as available. The key is to live near fueling stations that offer ethanol. If it is not readily available in your area, then buying an ethanol car would be a waste.

Often ethanol costs less at the pump than traditional fuel but the downside is your car selection may be limited. Look for Flexible Fuel Vehicles to see what is on the market.

Natural Gas
Natural gas cars are another option but probably not the best for most of us. Cars that run on natural gas are still relying on a limited natural resource but the cost is typically cheaper than gasoline.

Natural gas cars last longer because the fuel is cleaner so it is better for the engine and the environment. However, the tank holds less natural gas than it could hold gasoline which means you will get less miles per tank.

There are limited cars available that run on natural gas but your decision to buy one will mostly be based on whether or not you can find a fueling station. For those living in California, you have the most access to natural gas stations.

Biodiesel
Biodiesel cars are more readily available than natural gas cars and are a good choice for those that live in year-round temperate climates. Why is temperature important? Because biodiesel fuel is based on vegetable oil and can solidify in cold temperatures.

The nice feature of biodiesel cars is that you can switch back and forth between biodiesel and diesel. Any diesel engine can run on biodiesel so you have a greater selection of eco friendly cars to choose from.

One of the downsides of biodiesel is that it still gives off harmful pollutants. Another is that you need to be near a biodiesel fueling station or be willing to fill up on McDonald's grease. Not exactly an attractive choice.

Hybrid
The most available eco friendly cars and the best choice for the majority of drivers are hybrid cars. These cars run on in part or in total on a battery that is fueled whenever your car brakes. These cars are the hottest craze right now which is driving up selection and driving down price.

My husband and I are currently looking at purchasing a hybrid Honda Civic. You do not need a special fueling station to benefit from this type of car. Hybrids use regular fuel in addition to the battery power. A car like the Prius relies more heavily on the battery than a car like the Civic.

If you are considering purchasing a hybrid you should do some homework. Vehicles such as SUV's can be quite pricey. You need to calculate the cost of purchase against the savings in gas and see how long it would take you to break even. It may be that the added cost for the hybrid cannot be reasonably recouped through the gas savings.

In the case of a sedan, you are more likely to come out ahead with the savings at the pump.

You may have a concern about the cost to replace the hybrid battery should it go bad. Again, do some research. In the case of the Civic, the replacement cost is about $500 and you can drive the car even if the battery is dead. A Prius is dead if the battery is dead and the battery is more costly to replace.

There is no shortcut around doing your own research. Hybrid cars are changing with each model year so the facts and figures are different from year to year.

In my opinion, the Hybrid car is the best eco friendly car option we have right now. Solar cars, electric cars and hydrogen cars are not realistic for mainstream drivers at this stage but hopefully the future we will see them come around.

The Acura RDX and Acura Integra

A very first from the Acura stable, the RDX is a crossover vehicle which combines technology and sophistication very well. Developed and created to be an entrant in the compact luxury crossover SUV segment, it was initially introduced as a concept car. It was launched primarily to take the place of the Acura MDX for the entry level SUV. What's more, the vehicle also boasts of the best Acura auto parts plus a 2.3 liter K23A1 Turbo I4 engine for power.

On the other hand, the Acura Integra over the years has been able to develop a large client base. In line with everyone's expectations, the Acura Integra has been a car for those who were always interested in a basic commuter car while at the same time were looking also looking for solid base and modification with performance parts. The car further got a boost when in the early nineties Acura introduced a VTEC variable valve timing system in the Integra. Using its knowledge gained from Formula 1, the Acura brand innovated new technologies which its exotic car NSX received and further enabled its system to squeeze every drop of power out of a small 4-cylinder engine while at the same time maintaining an admirable amount of fuel efficiency.

Buoyed by a state-of-the art after sale service from Acura, the Integra also showed as to what was needed to survive in a competitive car industry. It had everything which was needed to compete in the global car industry in terms of design, quality and comfort. While on the other hand altering its marketing strategies, the Acura also solidified its place in the near-luxury market. It did away with model names, opting for alphanumeric designations instead. And effectively by 2001 renamed its Acura Integra as the entry model RSX, effectively bringing the Integra era to an end in America.

The Honda Element EX

It is a fact that the Honda Element EX gives maximum importance to functionality and less to aesthetics. There is no over-designing but enough of clever functional features, smart low tech solutions to satisfy all requirements. Whether you love it or hate it, the Element with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty is the outcome when the manufacturers begin to think out of the box and give importance to utility. Its cube shape may not be to everyone's taste, but several buyers are terribly excited about it. Matte-textured composite panels designed to guard each fender and bumper is in direct contrast with the painted surfaces of the doors and hood. The panels are of course scratch-resistant as well as dent-resistant and the user need not be over-concerned when parking in busy areas.

What is conspicuous about the Element is the clever arrangement of doors. The clamshell rear doors are hinged at the back, and can thus open only when the front doors are open. As there is no B-pillar between the doors, the Element is agape when the front and rear doors are opened, offering comfortable access to the back seat. The tailgate is also uniquely hinged, as about three-quarters of it goes up, while the lower quarter folds down. The functional emphasis is logically carried into the cabin features of the Element. Quality materials are used all along in the Element. The dash is a vast flat non-skid expanse. Gauges are perfectly set and readily readable. A useful ledge runs the length of the dash at convenient knee level, with troughs to hold your spare glasses and other detritus. The center stack houses are provided with climate control knobs, radio and more compartments, along with the stubby gear shift lever to aid the five-speed manual transmission. The seats are firm and flat and perfectly comfortable covered with a fabric that feels a lot like neoprene. Tough and gripping rubber mats cover the entire floor of the car. The whole interior wears a sturdy and stunning look that you will feel like spending hours inside. Another feature that needs mention is the headroom clearance is so high that the cabin feels looks like a commodious room.

The Element also provides the required driving comfort as the power delivery is smooth and efficient and its inline four cylinder engine, gives you no trouble when merging onto the freeway. With the five-speed manual transmission, the clutch is light and easy to apply. The truck-like positioning of the shift knob, sprouting from the middle of the center dash console, is friendly to use. The Element is also easy to park and has great visibility in all directions.

It has to be admitted that this is a car for everyday driving, but not cross-country highway trips. Even though the Element is ruggedly built, the manufacturer still needs to take care of certain areas. Even after driving the Element for hardly 5,000, the floor under the gas pedal was showing significant wear and a strong durable set of floor mats would help remedy that. The painted surfaces on the exterior of the Element and the composite surfaces need to be kept clean all the time to avoid discoloration and pitting.

Audi A4 or BMW 3-Series?

In the ever so popular entry-level luxury car segment, the BMW 3-series is a huge seller, and the benchmark. Audi's A4 has been no sitting duck either though, selling a crazy number of units as well. So which one is really better?

Well, I wasn't big on Audis previously. I saw them as glorified Volkswagens, partly, because most of them are. No companies can be accused of platform sharing as much as VW and Audi. They use the same platform for the Jetta, Golf, GTI, Passat, Beetle, A4 and A6. They stretch it and shrink it as necessary, but it's essentially the same chassis. So you can understand why I would look at an A6 and say... I wonder if that guy knows he's driving an XL Jetta.

My opinion on Audis changed quite a bit after owning a VW GTI VR6. Even at more than 110,000 miles on the odometer, the GTI tracks straight and true, solid as ever. There's a certain solidity that all German cars have that is very addictive. It's not that they're actually better built - the reliability is actually shameful, and nothing compared to the appliance-like Japanese cars. However, the perception of the solidity is still appealing. And so Audis are appealing to drive, as I found. But so are higher-end Volkswagens, and they feel strangely similar. We'll have to look at a lot more to find out whether the Audi A4 is worth it.

In terms of driving dynamics, while the A4 is very, very good, the 3-series is downright excellent. Nothing compares to the rear-drive, 50-50 weight balance, great steering feel, engine sound and fun-to-drive nature of the 3-series for anywhere near its price. If that is the most important thing to you, your decision is clear.

Not everyone looks at driving dynamics alone though. Let's talk about styling. BMWs look good, but I consider Audis and their Bauhaus style to be at the very top of mainstream cars. It's also understood that Audi designs some of the best interiors in the business. Fit, finish, colour choice, everything is superb and looks top-notch, better than just about every competitor. If the styling and interior are most important to you, your decision is clear as well.

Since both cars are similarly sized, it comes down to value. The A4 is cheaper than the 3-series, especially in front-drive four-cylinder form, but if you're looking at the front-drive 4-cylinder A4, you should probably have a look at the Jetta too, which offers the same chassis, engine and transmission for a lot less. On the other hand, you can look at it as a cheap way of getting into an Audi (but you'll miss a lot of the experience). Thing is, when you look at a Quattro V6 A4, the prices are right in line with a 3-series, and the value proposition doesn't quite look the same when an A4 can go up twenty grand in price.

I'd say that on the lower end of the scale, the A4 is the better choice, and if you're going to spend more, go for the 3-series.

The Audi R8 V10

Audi's preparing the new V10 version of the R8, to start at a jaw-dropping $147,200. The R8 has received a lot of glowing reviews, which is to be expected from a very stylish, mid-engined German sports car based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform.

The R8 is supposed to be a comfortable, luxurious two-seater, a GT if you will, that can perform very well. It definitely achieves those targets, without a doubt, but it's an Audi. Priced in the neighbourhood of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins. You shouldn't have to tell people that it's a Gallardo under the skin or that it is mid-engined, they should just know what it's about when it's above a hundred grand.

As much as I like the R8, I think that it is grossly overpriced. Here's my logic. The V8 R8 is around $115 grand, give or take. Also very expensive. The engine it has is Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 from the RS4, producing 420 horsepower. I consider that engine equivalent to BMW's 4.0-liter V8 in the M3 with 420 horsepower, Lexus' 5-liter 420-hp V8 in the IS-F and Mercedes' similarly-powered, hand-built 6.3-liter AMG V8. All those cars are priced between fifty grand and seventy grand. So if you take an engine from cars in that price range, and combine it with a borrowed platform that is not specifically made for the car, that car should be priced more reasonable. I would say seventy to eighty grand.

Cars above a hundred grand are something else. You can't use borrowed platforms and engines in this price bracket; that's just absurd! That borrowed engine doesn't have the charm of Ferrari's legendary V8 in the F430 or the awesome staccato bark of the mighty V12 in the Aston Martins. Its just not right!

So apart from overpricing and a lack of character, charm and inspiration, is there anything else that I find wrong about the R8? Yes. Performance. Since your R8 doesn't have the prestige of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin, it must have something else, right? Luxury? Yes, but the Mercedes SL-class has that better covered. Reliability? No, the Japanese own the rights to that. Looks? Well yes, but any better than the Italians? No. So the performance must be stunning, right? That depends on what you're comparing it to.

It has the same acceleration times as the car it borrows its engine from, the RS4. Also the same as the Mercedes C63, BMW M3 and Lexus IS-F. If its performance you want, there's a little thing they call Godzilla. Yes, for seventy-three grand, it is more than an entire second faster to 60 than the R8 and pull more than 1 G on the skidpad. The GT-R is also reliable, being hand-built in Japan.

So overall, how does the R8 fare? Fail.

The Cadillac SRX

Based on the report of the Consumer guide automotive places, each vehicle is categorized with respect to its price, size, and market position. There are about 18 classes. However, the premium SUV and the mid sized SUVs are considered as the similar models in terms both construction and size. In terms of the competition, the Cadillac RSX can be considered to be a close competitor to the likes of Mercedes Benz M class, Infiniti FX whereas the Buick Enclave, Acura MDX, and Lexus RX are considered to the "best buy" in SUVs.

As a matter of fact, the Cadillac SRX model is tested by the Consumer Guide, and it was found that this SUV with the V6 engine offers a fuel economy of 17.1 mpg on highway and a bit lesser during city travel. But, in another test meant for the gas consumption as well as the city driving test, the vehicle gave mileage of 13.6 mpg in the test.

The Cadillac Company raises the V8 engine RSX as the premium model. Though, the Cadillac SRX is considerably heavy weight with the elevation of the ride height, but the model is well accepted among its buyers due to the high level gripping and the overall body balance of the SUV. As a matter of fact, in terms of the reasonable balance, this SRX is considered very well among other SUVs. Moreover, the Cadillac SRX is quite remarkable due to its advanced features of the navigation system, power folding system, and large cargo space and so on.

The 2010 Hyundai Tiburon

The sporty looking Hyundai Tiburon ranks middle in its class type models. The sporty Tiburon model could not match with the interior and the performance abilities of the competitor vehicles. The Tiburon model was dropped in the model year 2008 and it was available in the GT, GS, SE and GT limited trim levels till then. The model scored good ratings from the Test Drivers Award for the vehicles responsive and the sporty nature, as it operates on the configuration of the front wheel drive, the model was not able to compete with the other sport car models. The vehicle was rated low in its performance.

The great asset to the Tiburon is its exterior the model scored middle range for its exterior design style. The interior in the vehicle is more comfortable and reasonably accommodating for the front seat passengers. According to the news stated by the Detroit News, "the vehicle feels and looks terrific". The sport model Tiburon was rated well in the crash tests conducted by the government and featured with a wide range of safety features like the front side air bags.

The recent model in Tiburon was offered in two types of engines - the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder that generates 138 horse power of energy and torque of 136 lb ft and the 2.7 liter V6 engine produces 172 horse power of energy and torque of 181 lb ft. The estimated EPA with the Tiburon is 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on highway. Now, the 2010 Hyundai Tiburon will be a much improvised and revamped version of the earlier generation, so let us wait and watch will it really serve as the much needed leap from failure to success?

The Ferrari F430 Spider

When I think of Ferrari, I think of one of the world's most desirable supercars with a thoroughbred pedigree that is almost peerless in the world of luxury sports cars. But that might be because I've just stumbled from the passenger seat of an F430 Spider that made me feel that no electric carriage had any right to be so comfortable whilst being so alarmingly rapid.

You'd think that the eclectic transport tastes of my family would have prepared me for this. I have a Land Rover Discovery, my brother drives a hulking Mitsubishi Warrior, but my father has always had a passion for sports cars. From Mg Midget to Porsche 911 Carrera Sport Targa to Renault Alpine, my sibling and I spent our younger years squished into seats (where more than one was available) that seemed far too close to the ground for my liking. But my word could those cars cut a dash. Whether on the motorway or country lanes, it was an education in power and handling.

Whilst I might hate real arachnids with a passion that borders on hysteria, there's nothing unlovable about the Ferrari F430 Spider. When a sports car loving friend decided that their most recent used Ferrari acquisition require breaking in, they proposed a weekend jaunt in the darkest reaches of Devon. I was initially sceptical, because looking at the F430 you wouldn't think that luggage was much of an option. And you'd be right. There's just about room for 2 medium sized bags in the admittedly handsome nose of the car, and you could probably squash some bits behind the seats, but overall it's advisable that you practise packing light if the Ferrari F430 Spider is going to be your transport mode of choice.

Having packed in the time-honoured frugal fashion of the frequent traveller (you'd be astonished at the diminutive size of the shoulder bag that I took for a week in Poland), I was alerted to my friend's arrival on Friday afternoon by the impressive vibrato of the Ferrari's engine a full two minutes before it hove into view at the end of my driveway.

Let me point out that we were travelling from York, a five and a half hour journey at the best of times, and one that could be the test of even the oldest friendship. Fortunately, we had something to divert us from any potential bickering over toilet stops or music choice. Because the used Ferrari dismissed any concerns about performance in the ten minutes between my house and Micklegate.

I won't bore you with the details of what two old lushes got up to in cider country (no, my friend does not answer to the name Withnail), but whilst the evenings were saved for sampling the local scrumpy, our days were devoted to the timeless novelty of feeling the wind in our hair as the glorious howls of the Spider echoed around the hills. And the thing is that I didn't feel any of the trepidation that I expected, because whilst it may have the appearance of an ethereal sprite, the F430 Spider grips the road with grim determination for a nearly unmatched driving experience.

The return journey was no less exhilarating, and it was almost with a sense of sadness that I waved goodbye as the fabulous used Ferrari took its leave. In fact, I'm not sure whether I was waving goodbye more to my friend or the car.

If you have the financial means, there's a good chance that you've already considered a Ferrari as your next luxury sports car. With the second hand car market offering exceptional savings, a used Ferrari will provide the same enjoyment as a new model, but at a more attractive price. Choosing from a specialist used Ferrari dealership will ensure that you receive tailored advice that takes into account your budget and vehicular needs.

Sir Cherrylton spent a glorious weekend with a used Ferrari F430 Spider, a good chum and plenty of local cider.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Kills Its Competitors?

Throughout my life I have admired beautifully engineered vehicles such as VW, Mercedes Benz, Ferarri, Lamborghini. However I have never in my wildest dreams imagined the shear beauty and unmatched power of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Take everything that you thought was possible about driving and throw it out the window.

The Bugatti beats every high performance vehicle in every single category. Check out these specifications

0-100km/h 2.5sec
100-200km/h 7.3sec
200-300km/h 16.7sec

Yes you are reading that correctly. At full steam this baby pumps 1001 horse power and tops out at 407 km/h! (it has a massive 14 piston engine). With its completely revolutionary body, this real life bullet car manages to hold on to the road and burn the competition on the straight away.

"But what about stability around turns?" you may ask. Well let me tell you it has a state of the art spoiler which adjusts automatically to give you maximum traction and control of the road. It also has an incredible electronic stability program (ESP) which gives it superior control at high velocity.

When I say nothing comes even close to giving this car a run for its money, I mean nothing. Recently on Top Gear, they pinned the Bugatti against the only possible competition, a euro jet fighter! I highly recommend if you are reading this to stop and check out this race immediately on YouTube. It was a 2 mile race between the jet and the Bugatti. The Bugatti drove straight one mile and came back, while the jet flew a vertical mile and back. The jet only won by a few seconds.

This car has raised the bar in the automotive world.

This car has actually inspired me to start my own business. I have promised myself to work every day of my life to have the opportunity to own one of these works of art. It may take some time being as sell for about 1.3 million dollars and only 300 were made. Maybe in 30 years I'll get lucky and buy one off a rich old guy. If you want to follow in my foot steps and make your own Bugatti dream come true I strongly urge you to check out this website http://www.MaverickOnlineBusinessGuide.com. It really helped me get started with my own business and start my path toward my Bugatti.

The Land Rover Defender Expedition

I have to confess to something. I'm a sucker for the old Land Rover series. Call it an innate countryside reaction (rural Yorkshire born and bred, quite feeble arms thank you), but there's something compelling about having a car that you can drive up a dirt track to rescue a stuck sheep without having to worry about whether the exhaust will fall off at the next bump.

I've tinkered with the guts of a Series IIA that is my senior by a decade, like an oil-covered Frankenstein stitching in the very heart of the monster. A classic Land Rover looks like a car that you can service yourself with nothing more than a wrench and hammer, and maybe a good pair of steel-toed boots for the inevitable frustrated kick that follows dropping a nut in the depths of the bonnet.

So it's with more than a little suspicion that I approached my next potential Landy purchase, because the more modern Land Rovers do not look as if they would take so kindly to an amateur mechanic wandering into his garage wielding a spanner and a copy of the Haynes manual. As ever I wanted a used Land Rover, both for the lower price and feeling that it had already been broken in to some extent. As I have already experienced the delights of bouncing about on country lanes in a tatty old Defender I decided to opt for a test-drive in the updated version.

With the vast range of models and specs on offer it may be a little daunting to the first time buyer. However don't be overwhelmed by the choices, because visiting a good specialist used Land Rover dealership means that you will be able to talk through your requirements with experienced sales staff who can advise on the model that best suits your needs. This applies to any used vehicle, and a specialist dealership should be your first port of call to avoid disappointedly kicking the tyres of a rust bucket that looks nothing like the "good as new, one careful lady owner" car that you were expecting.

As I was only borrowing this particular used Land Rover Defender for a few hours, I thought it prudent to avoid any off-road adventures. However travelling the back roads made it clear that the advances in technology have only served to enhance the performance of the Defender. I barely felt a jolt as I mounted the grass at the side of a single-lane country road in order to let another driver pass. And whilst I may love the classic models, one can't exactly pretend that they provide the most comfortable of rides over rougher terrain. The improved suspension of the updated Defender meant that even a vicious-looking pothole evoked merely a shrug from the vehicle.

Land Rover have a solid reputation built upon durability, and with their development of easy handling and ride comfort it's not hard to see why this iconic brand has endured even as local agriculture has sadly waned. I felt slightly treacherous in my enjoyment of the journey in the Defender, but there's no reason why a classic design has to mean a sore posterior.

All too soon I found myself heading back towards the dealership, wondering whether the Series IIA would still provide the same fulfillment now that I knew what I had been missing. Whilst I would be more inclined to leave the more intricate servicing of the newer used Land Rover models to the professionals, I'm sure that given time I'll be rooting around under the bonnet for the smaller tasks that can be handled by a competent home mechanic.

I admit that I was fully won over, and signed on the dotted line with only the briefest moment of hesitation as I wondered whether the Series IIA would throw some kind of sulk.

For anyone looking for a vehicle that combines off-road capabilities with on-road comfort, a used Land Rover could very well prove to be the ideal choice. If you get a chance to test it out on roads that offer slightly more challenge than the A1, you'll be able to get a feel for whether that particular model will be the one to take you up hill and down dale with the minimum of fuss.

Sir Cherrylton risked upsetting his Series IIA by writing about a used Land Rover Defender

The 2009 Honda S2000 Road Test

The best definition of a real sports car came from the late John Timanus, a successful racer in the '50s and '60s and long-time technical director of the Sports Car Club of America: "A sports car is a four-wheeled motorcycle." That's the Honda S2000.

As with a motorcycle, a real sports car makes the driver feel as if he is the car: Superman, cape flapping in the breeze. Like a motorcycle, a real sports car needs a skilled pilot for top performance. A real sports car is light: The S2000's curb weight is almost 900 pounds less than that of a Sprint Cup racer. A real sports car has a manual transmission. A convertible top, while not crucial, earns extra points. A real sports car doesn't necessarily have the most horsepower: A well-driven real sports car can be quicker up a mountain road than a pretender driven by one who believes bigger and more makes up for ineptness. The S2000 exceeds all the expectations of a real sports car. And one more: A real sports car allows you to imagine you're driving a real racecar.

Long ago, I tested Comptech Racing's Reynard 95I-Honda Indy car. Driving the 2009 S2000 put me back in that carbon-fiber tub. The S2000's digital dash is a near copy of that racer's. The driver's compartment of an S2000 is tight. You needn't be as short or trim as an Indy car driver, though the big of butt will find the S2000 cramped. Like an Indy car, an S2000 requires skilled foot coordination to get it in motion from rest. Stalls are inevitable.

Like an Indy car, the S2000's 237-horsepower 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine doesn't make a lot of torque at low engine speeds and doesn't reach its peak of 162 pound-feet until 6,800 rpm. Once either the Indy car or the S2000 smells the sweet spot of the torque band, their engines begin revving like crazy. At maximum acceleration, there's little point in putting your right hand back on the steering wheel between shifts of the S2000's six-speed transmission.

On dry public roads, it's difficult to get the S2000's sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE050s anywhere close to their limit. But a light rain prompted me to relive my Indy car experience. Like a knucklehead, I switched off the S2000's stability control and launched from a stop at an assertive 4,000 rpm. There was only a hint of wheelspin as the digital lines of the tachometer raced across the top of the dash. As the tach line turned red I pulled back on the precise, short-throw shifter without lifting fully off the gas. The rear tires lit up exactly like those on the Reynard-Honda when I was rough on the throttle. Fortunately, the S2000's Torsen limited-slip differential helped prevent the rear from stepping out.

I repeated this on the two-three upshift and was rewarded with a bit more wheelspin. The S2000 then told me the same thing as the CART car: "Be more gentle or you're going to make a fool of yourself." Having matured slightly over 14 years, I figured I didn't need to run the S2000 to the redline in third. In the rain. On a public road. Instead, I entered the upcoming off-camber left-hander a hair faster than was prudent. Okay, fast enough to earn chrome wrist jewelry from the police, and was rewarded by a slight and easily catchable tail slide. When the rear settled down, it required every bit of my scarce willpower to keep from going back to wide-open throttle. Old habits die hard.

The first edition of the S2000 appeared in 1999 as a 2000 model. Its 2.0-liter engine suffered from an overly high torque peak. To get maximum drag-race-style acceleration required a drag-car style launch. The driver held the gas and clutch pedals to the floor and, with the engine bouncing against its 9,000-rpm rev limiter, sidestepped the clutch. That early S2000 would then spin its tires about a rotation and a half until the engine bogged below the torque peak. Then it came to life. It wasn't easy on the equipment, but to quote the philosopher Tina Turner, we never ever do nothing nice and easy...we always do it nice and rough. With the new 2.2-liter engine, a best-time launch is accomplished at a more reasonable 4,500 rpm or so.

The S2000 is a spectacular-and real-sports car that would have been a cult legend had it appeared in 1969 or 1979 or even 1989. Unfortunately for it, the S2000 debuted when we were infatuated with three-ton station wagon (also known as SUVs). Still, this is a real sports car.

This Year Top 5 Convertibles

1. VW Beetle Cabriolet: This revived classic has been a huge hit since it was re-introduced to the car market. The cabriolet version was launched in 2003 and has been particularly popular among female motorists. Its retro styling and funky curves have made it 'the car to be seen in' during the summer months.

2. BMW Z4: A brand new Z4 has just been launched and it has proved that BMW are definitely at the top of their game. It is slightly bigger than the previous version with stronger masculine lines that ensure that heads are turned as it zooms by. The Z4 replaced the popular Z3 back in 2002 and has proved to be a more than adequate replacement. In fact, it has learnt from some of the design flaws found in the Z3 - which were to do with the suspension and chassis - to ensure that this car meets the highest criteria. The Z4 is one of the best-looking convertibles on the market.

3. Mini Convertible: Like Volkswagen did with the Beetle, MINI also revived another classic to great success. The MINI Convertible was launched into the car market in 2005 - available in MINI One, MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S specifications. The MINI Convertible kind of has the same appeal as the Beetle in that it offers you retro and classic styling - perfect for cruising around in the sunshine.

4. Mazda MX-5: The Mazda MX-5 is, simply put - Britain's best-loved sports car. It has been around since 1990 which proves that it has timeless appeal. It is stylish, sporty and affordable which offers motorists great value for money and has ensured that it has remained in production for such a long time.

During its reign we have seen three generations of MX-5. The first generation was available to motorists in Europe back in 1990 and proved an instant hit. The second generation was introduced in 1999 and featured a much more powerful engine. The third generation was then brought out in 2006 and just this year has seen a major facelift. This facelift has brought about major changes to the styling of the MX-5 - there are new headlights and large front grille which make the new MX-5 seem more aggressive and sporty - this sports car now means business.

5. Audi TT: When the Audi TT was launched in 1999 it proved an instant hit in the sports car market. Its iconic styling is unlike any other car on the road and has seen it win many prizes, including, 'Autobild - Most Beautiful Car' and 'World Design Car of the Year 2007'. The first generation was built on the same engine used in the Volkswagen Golf Mk 4 which ensured it had adequate power. Production on the second generation Audi TT commenced in 2006. The new Audi TT featured more angular styling and an improved rear-spoiler. The latest generation is available in both a Coupe and a Roadster - and continues to be a popular choice among those looking for a convertible.

The Pontiac G8 Sedan

The Pontiac brand is headed toward oblivion, but that doesn't mean that its flagship G8 sedan will bite the dust - at least completely. General Motors has announced that the G8, which is made by the company's Holden operation in Australia, will live on in the form of a Chevrolet model, likely the Caprice. Yes, authentic full sized rear wheel drive motoring is alive and well thanks to a recent reversal made by GM management.

Short Lifespan For The Pontiac G8

Introduced as a 2008 model, the Pontiac G8 has proven to be one of the most exciting big sedans sold by GM this generation. Seating five passengers and powered by a beefy V8 engine, the G8 has been compared with the BMW 5-Series in a number of categories including speed, handling, braking and comfort. All this while being priced tens of thousands of dollars less than its German competitor.

When GM announced that Pontiac would bite the dust, it also canceled importing the G8 from Australia where the car is sold as the Holden Commodore. This decision was made despite an outcry from GM faithful who still wanted to see the car sold in North America either as a Buick or Chevrolet model. Indeed, the sedan is sold in some markets as the Chevrolet Lumina, bringing the right car to those markets which crave a powerful full sized sedan.

Keeping Bob Lutz On

Bob Lutz, who has been the product lead for GM for most of the past decade, was recently asked by management to delay his pending retirement scheduled for year end. As part of that move, Lutz has been given the authority to decide the fate of several current, pending and future models including the G8. Lutz decided that the G8 would become the Chevrolet Caprice, slotting just above the Impala as Chevrolet's new flagship sedan. Likely, the Impala will continue to lead in sales, with the all new Caprice sold as more of a niche vehicle.

The Chevrolet Caprice could be quickly readied for sale once a new nose is designed for the sedan. That move could be completed within months, bringing the Holden model to North American Chevrolet showrooms before the year is out. Thus, along with all of the other 2010 Chevrolet models the Caprice may once again be offered to Chevy faithful.

Lastly, if the Caprice returns as planned it could also mean the return of the El Camino, a sport truck based on the Holden Ute platform. That model was slated for Pontiac as the G8 ST, but was canceled earlier in the year when GM was mulling Pontiac's future.

The Classic Lotus Elan

Produced between nineteen sixty two and nineteen seventy five, the Lotus Elan line-up consists of a two door coupe and two door roadster. The initial Elan models were introduced within this time frame and are now commonly known as the sixties Elans to distinct the cars from the later nineteen nineties models when the marque was reborn. The Lotus Elan follows the trend of the Lotus cars model names which begin with the letter L.

The Elan roadster was the first in the Elan family, a two seater convertible. A year later a hardtop variation was also introduced, as well as a coupe in nineteen sixty five. The Elan was very lightweight, composed of a fiberglass body and a steel chassis, fitted with a one point six litre twin cam engine. The car was also made available as a kit car, allowing the purchaser to build the car. The Elan model succeeded the Lotus Elite, a car which was well styled but was criticized for its price and reliability (or lack of it).

Five years after the initial lunch of the Elan the Elan +2 was debuted. The new variation was fitted with two extra seats, heightening passenger experience and appealing to the family market. The wheel based had to be increased to allow for the additional two seats. The +2 variation is noted for its great styling, sensibleness yet great performance. The Elan was ceased in nineteen seventy three, and the +2 two years later in nineteen seventy five. Just over five thousand of the +2 models were produced, with less than a third still around today. The Elan +2 has become popular among classic car enthusiast and collectors due to its favorable characteristics.

Why Are Viper Car Alarms So Popular?

There is little doubt that Viper Car Alarms by DEI are the most popular car security alarms in the world. There are many reasons for this. You may possibly remember a time when a car alarm was not a commonly seen accessory on a car. You would only expect to see an aftermarket car alarm system on an expensive sports car pictured in the pages of your favorite car magazine. But considering the way things are today, the car security alarm has become very common place.

It makes good sense to invest in a good professional quality car security system to protect your new car or truck. New vehicles are simply too expensive for us to go the risk of having them easily stolen. No alarm system can prevent a thief who is bound and determined to drive away with your ride. But a Viper car alarm, when installed correctly will certainly prohibit theft by all but a truly experienced thief. The Viper car alarm does its job by protecting your vehicle when it is well out of sight. The newer technology provided by Viper allows the vehicle actually to communicate directly with you via its tw-way remote control. This type of two-way communication is one of the latest advances in the industry used by Viper. It is commonly used on Viper's end car alarms and remote start systems. You can find good comparisons and car alarm reviews right on the web.

This is a great option, especially so if the owner lives or works in an urban area. In urban areas it is not uncommon to hear car alarms sounding intermittently during the day. The sound is so common today that many hearers don't even look up anymore. This of course makes two-way communication and the ability to monitor your vehicle's security from a distance a great benefit. Another factor that adds to the popularity of Viper car alarms is the fact that the manufacturer provides a wide array of electronic accessories to aid in integrating your alarm into you vehicle's electrical system.

Viper makes a few models that combine the car security alarm with a remote start system. This is a very attractive component to add to any vehicle. Along with the available installation accessories, these combination alarm and remote start systems provide addition ways of immobilizing the vehicle to help prevent any would be theft from driving away with your vehicle..

Unless you are electronically inclined and experienced with automobile electronics, it probably s a good idea to have your Viper car alarm professionally installed. You can purchase Viper car alarms on the web and then arrange for your local car electronics store for installation. In most cases, buying online will enable you to save on the overall cost even after installation when compared with a local purchase.

The New Toyota Venza 2009

Whichever label you want to give it, the new Toyota Venza appears like a winner.

Think of the Venza as a station wagon and you'll probably get the point. Of course, it does not look precisely like any station wagon we've seen before. Unveiled at Detroit's North American International automobile show in Jan, Venza drew heaps of attention. Among vehicles currently available, it reminds us most of the Ford Edge crossover.

There's plenty of the Lexus RX350 in this Toyota, too, though the Venza is pressed down nearer to the ground, and sleeker. Its front end is taller, but definitely molded in the theme of Toyota's current Camry sedan. The Venza's rear glass has a nice, long rake, and its taillights wrap around the rear fenders onto the hatch. Its standard wheels measure 19 inches in diameter, whilst 20-inch spoked alloys are optional. In sum, the Venza is an example of the more hunky, engaging cars Toyota has launched in a little time.

A look at its dimensions brings the crossover label into proportion. At 109.3 inches and 189 inches, respectively, the Venza's wheelbase and overall length match both Bell Road Toyota's Camry sedan and Highlander sport-utility inside fragments of an in. Put simply, the Venza's footprint on the pavement matches both Camry and Highlander closely. Yet with an overall height of 63.4 inches, the Venza slots right in the middle of the Camry and Highlander. It's ride height falls somewhere in the middle, too.

The 2009 Venza seats 5, like the Camry, instead of 7 like the Highlander. Its rocker height, or the lip around the base of its passenger doorways, is low, making it simple to lift feet within, yet the hip point for seated occupants is higher than the typical sedan's. The mix should deliver a mix many buyers seek : straightforward ingress and egress, with a higher seating position for an enhanced view around tall cars on the road.

The 2009 Venza should reach showrooms with the traditional model year changeover in early fall 2008. It'll be built at Toyota's assembly plant in Georgetown, Kentucky.

BMW X1 the Economical Sport-Utility Vehicle

BMW is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to its line of sport/utility vehicles. Unlike other manufacturers who are cutting back even abandoning this once popular and highly profitable vehicle segment, BMW is introducing its fourth line, the X1, an SUV that is smaller, lighter and much more fuel efficient than most SUVs in its class.

By adding a fourth line of SUVs, BMW is signaling that it believes that customers are still interested in a vehicle that can get the job done on the road and, if need be, be taken off the road. Based on the same platform underpinning its 1-series line of cars, the X1 will be powered by a standard 2.0L I4 gas engine paired with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. That arrangement should help the X1 break the 30 mpg highway barrier, but it could be that a similar sized diesel engine will have the greatest appeal for customers as BMW estimates that its 2.0L diesel will achieve about 45 mpg on the highway.

Rear Or All Wheel Drive Available

Available in either rear or all-wheel-drive, the X1 seats five passengers and will take over the entry level SUV market currently occupied by the X3. For its part, the BMW X3 will be moved slightly upmarket with standard trim levels raised accordingly. The X5 and X6 round out BMW's sport utility vehicle line.

Inside, the X1 will be fully equipped with the most current navigation system offered as standard equipment along with a panoramic sun roof, leather seating treatments, first class audio system and all of the usual BMW safety features including brake assist; lane departure warning; front, side and side curtain airbags; dynamic brake control; and active head restraints. Priced from the upper 30s, a fully optioned BMW X1 will retail for about $50,000 which will be about the same price as the all new Audi Q3 its chief competitor, though slightly higher than the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Styling Shared With The X3 And X5

The exterior of the X1 borrows the same styling cues used in the X3 and X5 with the hallmark long BMW hood and unmistakable bimmer front end. Customers who have already been sold on the X3 will appreciate the X1's generous size doors as well as its huge liftgate and surprisingly abundant storage area. BMW hopes to not only to bolster its conquest sales of other brands, but encourage current bimmer devotees to consider its newest and most fuel efficient SUV line. With a diesel option being made available, the X1 will appeal to both to the customer who want the practical side of a sport utility vehicle as well as the fuel efficiency of a potent, yet economical engine.

By adding the X1 to its fleet, BMW expects that this move will help it hold off Mercedes for luxury brand supremacy while offering a good option to the Q3, which is fast gaining Audi's latest offering. Competition among the German luxury brands is fierce which means that customers win as each manufacturer seeks to outdo each other in building passenger vehicles customers really want.

The Mitsubishi Outlander GT Prototype

Building on the success of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi Motors North America today conducted the World debut of a distinctive new model that takes the compact SUV to another new level of performance and sportiness - the Mitsubishi Outlander GT Prototype. The all-new design study is the centerpiece of the Mitsubishi Motors exhibit at the New York International Auto Show, which continues through April 19.

The Diamond white Outlander GT Prototype infuses performance and design inspiration from Mitsubishi's Lancer sport sedans and provides clear indicators of the future of Outlander.

"The Outlander GT Prototype is packed with technology, performance and premium features that are uncommon in the compact SUV class," commented John Koenig, executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America. "Along with its faster heartbeat, we also wanted to quicken pulses by channeling the look of our sportiest cars."

A front grille design inspired by the Lancer Evolution's "jet fighter" look is clearly in play on the Outlander GT Prototype, which sports complementary new design elements, such as a reshaped front bumper, side mirrors, fenders and hood. Reshaped Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, a new rear bumper and side sills, plus a bold polished finish on the already standard aluminum roof panel accentuate the sporty appeal.

The Outlander GT Prototype also benefits from improvements to the all-aluminum 3.0-liter SOHC MIVEC V6 currently found in the Outlander XLS, including a reduction in intake restriction plus optimized camshaft timing and compression ratio. The engine changes raise maximum output by 10 horsepower, for a total of 230 horsepower, with an improved torque curve for more responsive city driving and enhanced fuel economy and emissions.

To further increase fuel economy, the Outlander GT Prototype features an upgraded shifting program and Idle Neutral Logic, which automatically, and smoothly, shifts into neutral during vehicle standstill. It reengages at the slightest lift of the foot off the brake pedal, thereby providing instantaneous response.

Audi: 100 years of Car Making History

Karl Freidrich Benz was the man who created the first true automobile, Henry Ford visualised and created the first assembly line for mass production of large numbers of automobiles, both men played a crucial part in auto making history, but we cannot talk about auto making history without mentioning Audi.

Audi was founded by August Horch in 1909, the year he was forced out of the company he founded in 1899. In the beginning, Horch continued to trade under the Horch brand, but after his partners sued him for trademark infringement, he was forced to come up with another name for his company; it was then that the Audi name came up.

During a meeting in Franz Fikentschers' apartment to come up with a new name for the company, Franz's son who was studying Latin at the time (common in those days), suggested that instead of Horch they used Audi which mean "Hark!" or "Horch" German for "hear" and the idea was accepted by everyone attending the meeting.

The first models produced by Audi were the 2,612 cc 2.6 litre 4 cylinder model, followed by a 3564 cc 3.6 litre model, as well as 4680 cc 4.7 L and 5720 cc 5.7L models. In 1921 Audi was the first German car manufacturer to build a left-hand drive production car, the Audi Type K.

Audi Models of the 1920's were luxurious and were becoming successful in the racing tracks, in the early 30's Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to form Auto Union.

With the creation of Auto Union the four overlapping rings badge was created to represent the union of the four German car manufacturers. The Auto Union era is best known for its success in the racing tracks. The Silver Arrows dominated the GP car racing from 1934 onwards and established records that were only equalled in the early 80's by turbocharged F1 cars.

We'll skip the WW II and Post War periods, I jump all the way to early 80's when introduced the Quattro four wheel drive and the Audi Quattro, commonly know at the time as Ur-Quattro, a turbocharged coupé that dominated the rally tracks in the 80's and was the first German car to be produced in large scale featuring permanent all-wheel-drive (Quattro).

In 1985 Auto Union was officially dead and Audi shortened its name to Audi AG. Over the following years Audi introduced less successful models like the Audi 80 and the Audi 90.

Audi's big break happened in 1994 with the introduction of the Audi A4, a predecessor for the Audi 80, the Audi A4 gain recognition and sales went up which led Audi to develop more powerful and luxurious models like the Audi A6 and A8.

Two years later Audi released what became its most successful model to date, the Audi A3, built in conjunction with the Volkswagen Group using the same platform as the A4, the A3 was initially available only as a 3 door hatchback.

In 2000 Audi revolutionised sports car racing once again with the Audi R8 and dominated the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning 5 of 7 years it competed.

After 20 years of research with diesel engines the results were paid off with another revolutionary racing car the Audi R10 TDI, which again dominated Le Mans' racing tracks for four consecutive years, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, till it was replaced the new Audi R15 TDI.

All technological advances made by Audi in the racing tracks are used in its models nowadays. With their high fuel efficiency and low emissions the TDI engines are a reference, the petrol engines have high fuel efficiency thanks to Audi's Valvelift technology, not to mention the Quattro four-wheel-drive and all the other technological advances Audi makes year after year.

Prove to that is the Audi R8 a state of the art sports car that was successful in the racing and in less than 2 years gained respect of sports cars enthusiast form all over the world.

Audi's success is the reflect of the company's tagline Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning "Advantage through Technology".

Who Tried to Kill the Electric Car?

Even though the electric car is starting to grow in popularity around the world again, over the years there have been a number of attempts to block the development and production of such vehicles but who tried to kill the Electric car? Unfortunately there are a number of suspects with regards to blocking the development of the Electric vehicle market which include:-

General Motors
In the 1990s General Motors was involved in the production of an electric vehicle known as the EV1 which was the first mainstream electric vehicle to hit the market. The introduction of the vehicle was made possible by changes to various emission laws in California and with the backing of the Californian authorities it seemed set to change the marked forever. However, without notice GM withdrew the EV1 from the marketplace and despite spending over $1 billion on research and development the project was mothballed.

Oil-rich countries
One of the main losers as and when the electric vehicle market becomes main stream will be the various oil-rich countries around the world which earn billions and billions of dollars supplying the fuel to power traditional vehicles of today. There is a feeling that pressure has been put on various governments around the world, including the UK and US, to try and block the development of electric vehicles as long as possible.

Governments around the world
When you consider that countries such as the UK earn billions and billions of pounds from the taxation of petrol (with some suggestions at more than 70% of what you pay on the forecourt is paid to the government) the introduction of electric vehicles would reduce this income substantially. However the UK is not alone in potential loss of income as and when the electric vehicle market goes mass market and many governments around the world appear to have done their best to block the development of the electric car.

For further information and further discussions with regards to the development of the electric car market please visit the Electric Forum The latest electric vehicles, regulations for this new market and news of future developments are discussed in depth.

The Best 2009 Hybrid Vehicles

It goes without saying that hybrid vehicles are the private transportation of the future. The reasons include the fact that we have a finite supply of crude oil, the rising cost of gas over which we have very little control, our dependence on unfriendly nations for our oil supply, and the negative effects of gasoline exhaust on the environment.

Saving, be it the environment or on gas, is the primary reason most people buy these types of vehicles. To this end, it is anticipated that 2009 will be a big year for makers of hybrids because consumers are trying to reduce their consumption in the current economic downturn. It is during times like these that high gas mileage trumps size and becomes a major deciding factor when buying personal transportation.

King of the Road
The king of high mileage per gallon of gas is none other than the Toyota Prius. One of the first alternative-fuel vehicles to appear on the US auto market, the Prius offers 45 city and 48 highway miles to the gallon. The 2009 model has a bigger engine; therefore, provides more horsepower and has been designed with a very light frame aimed at pushing the gas mileage as close to 50 as is possible by improving the length of time it can run gas-free.

Close Runner-Up
The Honda Civic hybrid is second and it offers 40 city and 45 highway miles per gallon. It costs a bit more than the Prius, but has a sleeker look. The 2009 model has better battery packs and its regenerative braking system is capable of eliminating almost all emission from the vehicle. It is, also, the best choice for consumers who consider safety a priority when choosing a vehicle.

Third in Line
The third most fuel efficient hybrid vehicle is the Smart For Two. The smart car burst onto the market in Europe and is slowly becoming popular in the U.S. It offers 33 city and 41 highway miles per gallon. The major drawback to the Smart For Two is its size. It is very small, light, and has comparatively low horsepower compared to the other hybrids. However, it can be considered cute, affordable, and is perfect for city dwellers who don't want to spend too much money on a car. The 2009 model comes with a transmission that can be changed between manual and automatic.

Another Good Choice
The BMW Mini Cooper is another great choice of hybrid because of its high gas mileage. It offers 28 city and 37 highway miles to the gallon. The 2009 model comes in automatic and manual. It is built with BMW's pure quality, has an updated suspension thus providing a smoother ride, and has enough horsepower to hold its own on any U.S. highway.

Hybrid vehicles can be more expensive than all-gas vehicles; however, in the long run they will save the consumer and have a positive impact on the environment. Furthermore, nothing says "I'm hip and aware!" as being behind the wheel of a 2009 fuel efficient hybrid vehicle.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 Series

BMW is one of the world leading car manufacturers, this is due to all the years of experience, design, technology, and from some years till now, software that runs all over each car model, making it one of the most technological cars manufacturers too.

Each BMW has been using the usual fuel around the globe, but the global concerns, the climate change started years ago to make people start researching and developing other resources, the planet needs that, car manufacturers need to accomplish the transformation.

Hydrogen 7 is one of the BMW projects, the German car manufacturer has implemented all hydrogen technology inside is luxury vehicle, the BMW 7 Series, one of the most impressive cars not only because of the comfort, size, performance, but remember this car is also a heavyweight.

This means that in a world where hydrogen isn't available yet, at least as the usual car fuel, BMW couldn't send the car outside to the streets just using hydrogen, so this BMW Hydrogen 7 has also a combustion engine, nothing better for the driver than having that chance of deciding which fuel the car will burn, of course that the cheaper the better.

BMW Hydrogen 7 relies in a 7 Series with 12 cylinder, for those who care about speed the car will not reach all the speed that all that power car give has it's electronic limited to 230Km/h and it remains that way, whether the driver choses gasoline or hydrogen.

Fuel consumption is always a concern, this BMW can offer more than 200Km if the driver uses only hydrogen, that's probably not that much for most drivers around the globe but remember that this car must have place for a gasoline tank, which can deliver an additional 500Km, of regular driving of course.

Like the idea of driving a BMW Hydrogen car, maybe you do but the German car manufacturer isn't interested in the selling process, at least by now so this 7 Series model will not be available to the general public, BMW car will be leased to some costumers.

The Abarth Cars

Abarth Cars was founded by the Austrian born Karl Abarth, a designer who later became an Italian citizen and changed his first name to Carlo. Between nineteen twenty five and nineteen twenty seven Abarth worked as a motorbike designer for Castagna, whilst still only a teenager. Abarth was also a keen motorbike rider and raced in many races. Abarth went on to win the European Championship five times, but sadly had an accident in Austria which forced him to stop racing and instead focus his efforts towards engineering and designing a sidecar.

After moving to Italy permanently, Abarth set up Abarth and co in nineteen forty nine. The nineteen sixties saw successes for the company in regards to racing and hill climbing. Racing against Ferrari and Porsche, the cars commonly raced in the eight hundred and fifty and two thousand cc categories. As well as producing performance cars for racing, Abarth Cars also made exhaust pipes for racing and high performance cars. Tuning kits were also produced, and calibrations between Porsche and Abarth saw various racing cars produced.

In the summer of nineteen seventy one Fiat bought Abarth Cars, and the racing team was acquired by the Italian racing car manufactured, Osella. Abarth was used as a racing subsidiary of Fiat, helping with the Fiat rally cars. The Abarth marque was also used for some of the high performance cars produced by Fiat, such as the Ritmo Abarth 130 TC.

The Abarth brand was resurrected in two thousand and seven, with Fiat launching the Punto Abarth and Punto Abarth S2000.

The Nissan Navara

As a double cab, Nissan navara has an advantage over others when it comes to car size. And though, it is not always true that bigger is better, when it comes to vehicles specifically for loads, it definitely make sense. Because of that, it had been favored by many who are looking for vehicle that is truly apt for work.

Basically, it is built in Spain. It is of the same production line with Pathfinder, one of those to which it is being often compared with. As it is very important today to wisely pick the car that you will be having, it is being dubbed as the best that you can have as it is being claimed to combine both luxury and quality.

However, there would always be two sides in a story. If there are those who favor and appreciate it, naturally, there are also those who got negative things to say about it. That is just normal though as no car is really perfect. There would always be flaws and drawbacks that can be seen in different perspectives.

If you can live through the drawbacks of Nissan Navara though, it can be a very useful pick up to use. One of its strengths is the fact that it is a spacious car that can carry quite a load. It is very much suitable to businesses and other specific tasks as moving furniture and transferring products.

To know how great or not-so great of a ride is Nissan Navara is, it is important to check on its features and capabilities. There are three points that can be used as basis of the judgment.

  • Load Space - As been mentioned earlier, it has a more space for loads than other double cabs. It even has an additional feature of self-locking cleats for securing loads. This keeps from rolling about from one to another which can possibly cause damages.
  • Appearance and Features - Though Nissan Navara is one that can be considered as a workhorse of a vehicle, it has a nice exterior and interior design. It is of smooth silhouette with fog light, roof rail, automatic headlights and washer and even electric windows and mirrors. Inside, it had upholstered seats, CD player, bluetooth connectivity, remote central locking and even satellite navigation. And so it can basically provide the comfort and convenience other luxury cars can give.
  • Engine - Generally, Nissan Navara is not really a quiet car. However, its engine is more powerful than other of its category. And though it runs in diesel, it can be pretty powerful.

As a summary, the Navara has both advantages and disadvantages but the former outweighs the latter. Though it is more of a car of functionality, it is able to provide luxury and comfort to its passengers. And with that, Nissan Navara makes quite an impressive ride.

Nissan Navara has an impressive record for a ride. Know more about it you can be sure that you are opting for a double cab of truly high quality.

Acura TSX the Biggest Competitor of 2010 Honda Accord?

Acura TSX is the one of the trendiest cars designed by Acura/Honda in recent times. During the year 2003, it was available only in Canada and United States whereas the company plans to launch this car in Mexico this year. Honda also plans to replace this model with the previously made Acura RSX.

There are almost three places where this car is manufactured namely Saitama, Sayama and Japan. The basic design of this car is inspired from CL-series Accord. To cover the marketing in Japan, Europe and Australia, the interior design of this car has been changed. TSX has continued sales in North American market alongside the mid-sized Acura TL. The 2008 produced TSX model has a 6-speed manual transmission, four cylinder engine and front wheel drive. This car was launched for the first time in the year 2004.

Just after one year, in 2005 it got updated with various facilities including XM Satellite Radio, Steering Wheel Mounted Audio and four way power passenger seat along with Cruise Controls. There were also some changes made in the 2006 including standard integral Fog Lights, 5 hp power additions to the engine, standard side skirts, sporty looks and more stylist wheels etc. From its safety point of view, Multi-Information Display was added in the instrument panel. Some of the additional facilities include the Bluetooth compatibility and an advanced audio player.

But, looking at the current market, apparently the latest generation Acura TSX might actually turn out to be the biggest competitor of the Honda Accord in those market where both the Honda as well as Acura models are being marketed, especially the North American market.

The Mercedes GLK

The days of the huge, ponderous SUV are over. Not so much because people don't want a sport/utility vehicle, but the one that they are interested in purchasing offers many of the same capabilities in a smaller package.

The compact Mercedes GLK is the newest in a family of sport/utility vehicles that have changed the way people think about Mercedes-Benz. Sure, the safari-like GL remains popular with some buyers while the large ML continues to hold sway in a category where every luxury make has a presence. But the five passenger GLK shows that the same suspension, agility and design afforded to its larger brethren works quite well on a smaller scale.

Smaller Scale, Big Cabin

Although from the outside the Mercedes GLK looks much smaller than it actually is, it is on the inside where buyers learn just how much room is available to them. Head, shoulder and foot room is more than ample and, with two sunroofs, the interior seems even larger.

As expected, the seating in the GLK is at the top of its game. That shouldn't be a surprise to Mercedes devotees, but it is a refreshing change for a vehicle in this segment. Too often a compact SUV sacrifices some comfort in order to keep its price down, but the Mercedes GLK flies against that trend by delivering full luxury without compromise.

Robust Engine, Off Road Capability

Under the hood, the 3.5L V6 engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, offering the right amount of power and delivering a combined 18 mpg whether you choose the front wheel drive or all wheel drive model. Most customers seem to prefer the latter, giving them the best ride under all sorts of road conditions. And, a pair of off road packages allows drivers to take the Mercedes GLK where its bigger brethren roam, just the sort of option needed to win the mud season wars.

The brake system is yet another area where Mercedes shines, which means that the GLK has a wonderfully short braking distance. Traction control, brake assist and anti-lock brakes work to bring the GLK to a full stop while the SUV's independent front and rear suspension help to keep the Mercedes under the driver's complete control at all times.

Let's Take Out The Boat

In the GLK, Mercedes has also solved a problem that sportsmen have with most compact SUVs - they simply aren't designed with a large towing capacity. But Mercedes configured the GLK to not only perform well on and off road, but to do so while pulling as much as 4400 lbs of boat or camper behind it. Hybrid the Environmentally Friendly Car

Not everyone is comfortable with a fuel efficient vehicle that only has two wheels like a moped or a motorcycle. There shouldn't be a push for a person who isn't confident in their ability to operate one to have to do so. This can result in a accident occurring and that isn't worth saving money on fuel costs.

For other people, those types of vehicles just aren't practical. You may have a family so you need to drop the baby at daycare and another child off at school. You can't do that without a regular vehicle.

You may live in an area where it is too cold for most of the year to get any real use out of those two wheeled options even though they are fuel efficient. There is no need to worry though as you do have some really good options.

One of them you have likely heard a great deal about: the hybrid car. This is a type of vehicle that operates using two different fuel sources. One of them is gasoline and the other is either solar power or electricity. With the solar power, there are cells that charge during the day. With the electricity there are batteries that have to be recharged on a regular basis.

Regardless of which one you choose, gasoline will be the back up fuel source. This means when you don't have any more solar power in the cells or any more electricity in the batteries you will switch over to the gasoline that is in your vehicle.

Once you have the opportunity to recharge the main energy source, it will switch back over. You don't have to do anything to get the vehicle to go from one power source to the next. It will be an automatic switch over and it can happen in the middle of your commute to work. You won't lose power in the vehicle so don't worry about the speed limit that you are driving.

A hybrid vehicle is designed to be able to save energy in ways that ordinary vehicles can't. Pushing on the brakes of your vehicle is a common practice. It helps you to slow down when you need to as well as to completely stop your vehicle. In a regular vehicle the braking process results in more fuel being used. This is because they car has to get back to a certain speed and it takes fuel to do so. Hybrids rely on a process known as regenerative braking. Instead of using more fuel you will actually create more energy each time you step on the brakes.

All hybrids also have an automatic shut off sensor. This means when you roll up to a stop sign the engine will completely stop. As soon as you step on the accelerator pedal, it will restart. As a result, the excess idling that adds up and wastes fuel is completely eliminated.

A smaller motor is used in hybrid vehicles so it takes less fuel to give them the necessary power. However, you don't have to worry about not having enough power to go the proper speed limit or anything like that. Some people have a fear that a hybrid car will be slow and that it will just leave them stranded due to not enough energy. This isn't a scenario that will ever become a reality for anyone with a hybrid vehicle.

They are very well made and for years they were researched before offered to the general public. In fact, hybrids were tested by companies all over the world including the various branches of the United States military.

For those individuals who want to continue driving larger sized vehicles, a hybrid can be the perfect solution. There are small vehicles but also the large ones including the Yukon by GMC and the Tahoe by Chevrolet. Both of these were added in 2008 to meet consumer demands. These hybrid vehicles are expensive though and that is what often prevents consumers from buying them.

The Peugeot 205 GTI

The French automobile producer Peugeot manufactured the 205 for fourteen years, between nineteen eighty three and nineteen ninety seven. The production of the car in the UK ceased a year earlier, in nineteen ninety six. The higher performing GTI hatchback was equipped with either one point six or one point nine litre engines, producing over one hundred and five break horse power for the smaller of the two engines. The 205 was awarded the "Car of the Decade" in CAR magazine in the nineties, and the 205 GTI is often cited as the hottest of the "hot hatches".

For the inexperienced driver the 205 GTI will likely be more difficult to drive than its modern day counterparts, with the lack of electronic driving aids and the oversteer experienced when cornering hard. The initial one point six litre engine produced just over one hundred and five break horse power, but the power was increased by around ten break horse power when the new XU5JA engine was fitted which had larger valves shared with the one point nine engine. The one point nine litre engine produced one hundred and twenty six break horse power, yet the power was decreased in the late models, down to one hundred and twenty. The decreased power was seen as an answer to the increased insurance premiums for the car which was badly affecting sales.

There were subtle differences between the one point six and one point nine litre models. The one point six model had clothed seats, smaller alloys, and disc / drum brakes. The larger engine variation had half leather seats, fifteen inch alloys, and all round disk brakes.

The 1.5L Petrol Engine Option Honda Jazz

Honda recently launched is premium hatchback model Jazz in India. The model received a lukewarm response from the Indian car buyers mainly owing to its hefty price tag. If the overall response is not extremely encouraging, it is not disappointing either. In spite of being a premium car, Jazz has managed to pull crowds to the showroom and the company booked 1000 Jazz in the first week itself. Deliveries of the new Jazz model have started from June 10 onwards.

"We are happy at the response received by Honda Jazz; we are sure that the customers of Honda Jazz will appreciate the product and help us win new customers," said Honda Jazz, Mr. Jnaneswar Sen, Vice President, Marketing, Honda Siel Cars India. Jazz will be manufactured at Honda's Greater Noida plant and sports a localization level of 77% from day one. The Jazz has also been certified to give 16.1 KMPL tested by ARAI.

Current model of Honda Jazz comes with a 1.2 Litre i-VTEC engine generating 90 bhp but Honda is ready to increase the power of the new Jazz already. It intends to launch the 1.5L petrol variant in 2010. Apart from the 1.5L engine, it will also have an optional automatic transmission but that would be at the cost of additional one lakh rupees.

What remains to be seen is that is the Indian customer ready to shell out a price for small car just for its luxury, Honda's reliability and its brand image.

One of the most popular car questions about the Hyundai i20, is whether it comes in diesel.

The Corvette Sting Ray

Some cars are able to leave its mark in the mind of the people that other cars are unable to replace. Same is the case with the Corvette Sting Ray. The car's interior was well decorated and it offered many different features. The company was able to introduce new generations one after another.

People often confused this car with the Stingray which stayed in the market from 1968 to 1982.

C2 was the second generation and the third generation was introduced as the C3. Both the cars are significantly different from one another. One of the main differences is the spelling. Bill Mitchell was the creator of the C2 Sting Ray who was the styling chief of the GM.

The interior was improved in order to make it more comfortable for the passengers. New windows were introduced at the rear but later on were removed as it was blocking the view.

Panels of Fiber glass were used as in the older versions. Dual headlights were also placed with the pop-up feature. This added more beauty in the car and due to this the popularity of the car increased. The best thing about these lights is its aerodynamic feature. This was not introduced in any other car before.

The company didn't stopped here and kept introducing new features in the car. These features made this car more popular and were able to compete in the market effectively. These features include:

- Side-mounted exhaust, but this feature was optional and it depends on the buyer whether he wanted to get it installed or not

- Convertible roofs that one can fold and store at the back of the driver's seat

- Trunks without lids

- Customer can even get the Stay Ray with fixed top

Many different options were available to meet the requirements of customers and this made the car more popular. This is the reason why its popularity isn't decreasing over the years. The company is bringing improvement in the model to keep it competitive.

It offers great speed to speed lovers and comes in 3 different types of engine to suit the customer's choice. The different engine choices available are 327, 396 and the 427 CID and the horse power of the engine ranges from 250 up to 435. It offered the driver to experience the independent suspension in this car and it also have disc brakes installed in all (four) of its wheels.

The car was able to gain fair market and was able to give tough competition to its rivals. You should try it once in your life and will definitely feel the difference in the drive. You can never forget the experience of driving this car.

This was a short history of Corvette Sting Ray, and it is hoped that information in this article will help you to familiarize with its history.

The 2009 Honda Accord Coupe

Not since the long-missed Acura NSX sports car has a Honda product prompted people to ask, "What is THAT?" The 2009 Honda Accord Coupe inspires the same curiosity by those who have never seen one-and even a little amazement to learn it's a Honda, and an Accord. It has an authoritative, road-serious look, and with the available 271-horsepower V6 and sport-tuned suspension, it has the power to match.

Coupe Du Jour

Say "Honda Accord" and most will think: boring but reliable and economical transportation. The 2009 Honda Accord Coupe requires new word associations: "attractive and fast." The Accord Coupe is far more than an Accord with the rear doors welded shut. The most obvious feature is its styling. For us, it's like a cross between a BMW 3 Series and an Aston-Martin DB9. It enjoys Honda's tradition of durable attractiveness-styling that doesn't go quickly out of style. Compared to the Accord Sedan, the Coupe is narrower and shorter. It has more aggressive suspension tuning and a lower final drive ratio for better acceleration.

Inside, the upscale feel continues. A multi-curved black dash is accented with a polished aluminum-colored band across the bottom. The top-of-the-line tester that Honda provided boasted supportive leather seats. Access to the back seat is as easy as it gets with a coupe. Once seated, there's adequate room for two average-sized adults. The Coupe has two fewer inches of headroom than the sedan, so basketball players and those with a larger than average behind will bump their heads on the ceiling. The center rear seat is for urgent situations only.

Power Levels

Two engines are available: A 190-horse, DOHC, four-cylinder, and the potent 271-horse SOHC 3.5-liter V-6. The six, which features four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing, makes a strong 254 pound-feet of torque at a relatively high 5000 rpm. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. The automatic suffered from a bit of lag between when we asked for full throttle and the transmission downshifted to the needed gear. That gave the BMW too much of a head start. The four-cylinder with the five-speed manual gets 22 miles per gallon in the government's city driving cycle and 31 on the highway. The V-6 automatic gets 19 in the city and 28 on the highway.

A limiting factor in the Accord Coupe's ability to keep up with a 230-horse BMW 328 or a 300-horse 335 on winding roads are its less-than-sticky Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 all-season tires. Drive too deep into a tight corner before getting on the brakes and the anti-lock braking system will flutter like a frightened dove and the car will slide wide of your intended path. The Coupe's handling seemed nicely balanced but we kept radically overestimating the level of grip. The Accord Coupe will require a switch to ultra-high-performance summer tires to keep up with a well-driven BMW. Since Michelin doesn't make ultra-high performance tires in the Coupe's P235/45R18 original equipment size, options include the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A or the low-cost Kumho Ecsta SPT. Fitted with either, the Honda-BMW match-up will be determined mainly by the drivers' skills and determination. With sticky tires on the Honda, even 335i drivers will have to keep an eye on the rearview.

Top Models

The Accord Coupe comes in three trim levels: The base LX-S, the mid-level EX and the top of the line EX-L. Only the EX-L is available with a V-6. Pricing begins at around $23,000 and explodes past $32,000 for the EX-L V-6. This eighth version of the Accord Coupe was first introduced in 2008 and was changed little for 2009.

Standard in the V-6 Coupe is a 270-watt AM/FM/6-disc in-dash audio system with seven speakers. Standards include MP3/auxiliary audio input jack and XM satellite radio. We found the speed-sensitive volume control a very nice feature, especially when slowing after a mountain-road charge. A continually annoying trait of Hondas is reflections cast into the windshield and backlight at night and even under certain daylight conditions.

The Accord Coupe is a classically beautiful, strong performing two-door, four-seater. A dozen years ago it would have been among the top-performing sports coupes on the market. Add a set of sticky tires and a skilled driver and it is today, too.
